Wrecking Corp Begins Demolition and Façade Retention of Historic Luzon Apartment Building

Wrecking Corp of America last week began demolition and excavation work at the 2501 Pennsylvania Avenue site of the historic Luzon Apartment Building. Wrecking Corp also will perform a facadomy to retain the brick façade, which will be incorporated into a luxury condominium project.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (PRWEB) February 13, 2007 -- Wrecking Corp of America last week began demolition and excavation work at the 2501 Pennsylvania Avenue site of the historic Luzon Apartment Building. Wrecking Corp also will perform a facadomy to retain the brick façade, which will be incorporated into a luxury condominium project. The general contractor for the project is Tompkins Builders of DC.

"In order to preserve the historical feel of this site," said Terry Anderson, Wrecking Corp executive VP, "the existing 5-story brick façade will be maintained after it is shored and severed from the balance of the structure to be razed. This is a complex project on a relatively small site, located at a busy downtown DC corner, and will require close coordination between Wrecking Corp. and the other contractors performing sheeting and shoring."

The Luzon Building, which has been vacant for years, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 as an example of Romanesque architecture from the 1875-1899 period.

The DC Historic Preservation Review Board, in recommending the building for listing, cited the Luzon as a prime example of an apartment building, a structure in its early development during the late 19th century. Built in 1896 and designed by Washington architect Nicholas Haller, the Luzon is one of only a dozen or so apartment buildings remaining from the period.
