March 31, 2005 -- If you are trying to find an Architect you need to read this. One option to find an Architect, has always been to open the yellow pages and point, always a bit risky, for another, you can invite every architect who’s ever sent information or called on you over to the house, one at a time, or set up appointments and drive around town, to each one, it would take about 3 weeks - we don’t recommend these approaches.
Maybe you could Network with your colleagues at work, neighbors friends and through professional associations like the Seattle AIA to identify firms who design buildings similar to what you want, and/or visit their projects. Collect names from magazine articles, typically an initial list of no more than say, 10 should do it.
Better, pre-qualify the list by phone and narrow it down to 5-7 for initial screening, usually through a Request-for-Qualifications (RFQ). Send an RFQ to your list and then, based on what you get back, interview 3-5 firms. Got time for that?
Give firms ample time to respond to an RFQ. Every firm out there is always grateful for three to four weeks turn-around time. It is also helpful to list a name in the RFQ as a point of contact to answer questions about your project and/or arrange for a site visit. “We will have questions and we will want to visit!” There has got to be a better way?
