Rebuilding Hurricane Proof Construction

September 11, 2005 -- There will be rebuilding along the Gulf coast but conventional construction should be discouraged. DRD Enterprises will submit a proposal to the local and federal government to build monolithic concrete homes.

This type of construction utilizes unskilled labor thus locals could be put back to work immediately. The homes, similar to the dome home that withstood Hurricane Ivan in Panama City, are built entirely of steel rebar and sprayed or hand packed concrete. The entire structure roof, walls and foundation are all tied together to form a monolithic structure. In case of title surge the second floor is used as a safe haven while the first floor becomes flooded, yes belongings will be lost but the structure and foundation remain intact.

DRD Enterprises has a factory located in Davie, Florida and has been constructing hurricane shelters since Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida, owned by David Pressler a retired Miami Dade Firefighter. Mr. Pressler saw first hand what a major hurricane did to conventional constructed homes and set out to design a better hurricane proof home. Unfortunately due federal regulations a home that is not conventional cannot receive a construction loan so all attempts to rebuild homes that can easily withstand cat 4 and 5 hurricanes was shelved. The next best step for Mr. Pressler was to build hurricane shelters using the same technique but on a smaller scale (www.lunarcon.com). These 10ft ecoshells as they are called are engineered to withstand 160 mph winds.
