Plastic lockers have long been a staple of moisture sensitive locations including gyms, spas and pools. But, recently plastic lockers are replacing steel lockers in the hallway.

According to Matt Keisling of Comtec Industries, manufacturer of Tufftec Lockers, “Plastic is actually more durable than steel. It is more resistant to vandalism, graffiti, moisture and mold. It is almost impervious to buckling and denting. The latching mechanism in a Comtec locker offers greater resistance to break-ins. Significantly, a plastic locker lasts 2-3 times longer than a steel locker. While plastic lockers may have a higher initial cost, the savings comes with lower cost of maintenance and fewer replacements.
“I’ve seen a huge up trend in plastic lockers for schools” says Judy Connelly, of Handling Innovations, one of Comtec’s largest distributors. With the recent natural disasters, the military is replacing steel lockers with plastic to avoid replacement should flooding occur in the future.
Plastic lockers have other applications including team lockers and
stadium lockers where larger equipment is kept. They provide moisture resistance for ski resorts and golf clubhouses. Paint chipping is never an issue and deep scratches can easily be filled or fused. The food and chemical industries have long favored plastic because of the ease of cleaning.
