May 6, 2005 -- Colorado may be best known for the beautiful Rocky Mountains and the plethora of exciting outdoor activities it offers. A new website, www.usacolorado.com, helps people learn about its beautiful landscape as well as Colorado's history, its government, laws and other demographics.
“ The Centennial State. ”
The informative website, launched today, can educate anyone about the state of Colorado. Among the facts listed on the website:
* The territory which ultimately became Colorado was added to the United States by the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and the 1848 Mexican Cession.
* In 1859, the Colorado Gold Rush was responsible for bringing droves of starry-eyed settlers to the Denver area, though the numbers decreased rapidly after the initial mining boom.
* Colorado became an official state in 1876 and earned the moniker, "The Centennial State."
* The landscape is nothing short of spectacular. The Rocky Mountains within Colorado contain 52 peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation. These mountains, called 'the fourteeners' have conifer trees and aspen trees up to the tree-line (about 12,000 ft).
* The Rockies are snow-covered only in the winter; most snow melts by mid August with the exception of a few small glaciers.
* The Colorado Mineral Belt is an area rich with minerals that ranges from the San Juan Mountains in the southwest to Boulder and Central City.
* The capital city of Denver is a beautiful city with lots of brick structures and a modern transportation system.
* The various outdoors destinations such as Aspen make it an attractive vacation spot both in the winter for skiing, and the summer for hiking, mountain biking, and other more extreme sports.
* It is also home to the University of Colorado at Boulder. The original campus of the University of Colorado was founded in 1876 in Boulder. Built in the shadow of the Flatirons–the Boulder campus is often recognized as one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation.
* With its 200 classic rural Italian-style buildings and complexes, CU-Boulder has been recognized as one of America's "most architecturally successful campuses."
