Timber framing is a method of creating framed structures of heavy timber jointed together with pegged mortise and tenon joints. The method is used primarily to create exposed beam design in virtually any area of the home, including entryways, great rooms, dens, pavilions, gazebos, and kitchens. Arrow Timber Framing works with customers to create a unique design that compliments the space during the first phase of the process. The company's helpful and experienced staff then verifies the engineering requirements, orders the timbers and begins site construction so that the home will be ready for the timbers once the fabrication process is complete. Assembly and installation are the final stages, and usually are assembled in less than a week.
"We've built a reputation on beautiful, creative designs that increase curb appeal and commercial value to homes and buildings." said Bert Sarkkinen, owner of Arrow Timber Framing. "We've completed tons of projects throughout the Pacific Northwest, including homes featured in the Lynnwood Homes Parade of Homes, and prominent outdoor pavilions in several local communities. Our clients comment that they like our down-to-earth timber framing staff, whose hard work and passion shines through in every project that we complete."
In addition to the aesthetic appeal of timber framing, it also has a number of practical benefits, which are huge selling points for homeowners. Noted as one of the top trends in eco-friendly building, the technique uses renewable resources, creates less milling waste, and often makes use of local and recycled resources. Additionally, wood joinery takes the place of metals, and the use of superior insulating panels (SIPS) makes homes more energy efficient.
Arrow Timber Framing uses primarily Douglas fir, as well as reclaimed timber and cedar for timber construction. Texture choices include smooth, rough-sawn, or hand-hewn. Due to exposed beam construction, there can be some plumbing, electrical and HVAC constraints, however, construction logistics are the typically the same as regular framing.
Timber framing can be adapted to both contemporary and traditional style homes. To learn more about the art and benefits of the technique, or to view pictures of projects completed by Arrow Timber Framing, visit
